
Adaptive Protocols and Practical Strategies for the Use of Novel Anticoagulation Reversal Agents
This interprofessional, community Grand Rounds initiative is targeted to addressing the professional practice of physicians, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, who manage patients who are taking anticoagulation therapy, and who may require reversal agents for direct oral anticoagulants to address acute bleeding complications. There will be an in-depth discussion regarding assessing the risk of life-threatening bleeding in patients, understanding the novel pharmacology of specific anticoagulation reversal agents, and developing institution-specific protocols based on recent clinical evidence.

Target Audience
Physicians, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who manage patients who are taking anticoagulation therapy, and who may require reversal agents for direct oral anticoagulants to address acute bleeding complications.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this application-based activity, participants will be able to:
- Identify patient groups who are at risk for experiencing emergent or life-threatening bleeding as a result of anticoagulation therapy.
- Assess the risk for emergent or life-threatening bleeding in patients who require anticoagulation therapy and appraise current recommendations for managing bleeding complications.
- Explore the novel pharmacology and clinical utility of available specific anticoagulation reversal agents.
- Develop treatment strategies and institution-specific protocols based on clinical evidence for recently approved anticoagulation reversal therapies to promote patient access and effective management of acute major bleeding.

Dr. Piazza is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and is faculty in the Cardiovascular Division at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Piazza received his Medical Degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Massachusetts. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine, served as the chief medical resident, and completed Fellowships in General Cardiology and Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. He also completed a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute–sponsored Advanced Fellowship in Vascular Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Piazza’s research interests include the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of venous thromboembolism, thrombophilia-associated infertility, computerized decision support to improve cardiovascular outcomes, and stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation.
