Dr. Anil Gehi is an Associate Professor of Medicine in Cardiac Electrophysiology at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He also serves as the Program Director of the Fellowship in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology. Prior to joining UNC in 2008, Dr. Gehi completed his Medical Degree and Medicine Residency at the University of California at San Francisco, his Cardiology Fellowship at the Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York, NY, and his Electrophysiology Fellowship at Emory Medical Center in Atlanta GA. Prior to medical training, Dr. Gehi completed Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Electric Engineering at MIT. His clinical expertise is in catheter ablation and device therapy for management of cardiac arrhythmias, with a particular focus in complex ablation. His research interests focus on atrial fibrillation, including the development of novel pathways for care, improving quality of care, and advancing techniques for ablation.

Sean Pokorney, MD

Dr. Pokorney is an electrophysiologist and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Duke University. His areas of expertise include treatment options related to stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation, bleeding management in atrial fibrillation, atrial fibrillation prevention and rhythm management, contact force-sensing catheters, the use of antiarrhythmic medications, risk of sudden death and use of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators after acute cardiovascular events, and lead management for patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices.

He received his MD and his MBA in Health Industry Management from Northwestern University. His post-graduate training included a Clinical Research Fellowship at the Duke Clinical Research Institute, as well as a Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship and an Electrophysiology Fellowship at the Duke University Medical Center.

Dr. Pokorney has contributed book chapters on pharmacological management of atrial fibrillation in the outpatient setting and on managing recurrent implanted cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) therapies. He has also presented on the Food and Drug Administration’s restriction of edoxaban use in atrial fibrillation patients with normal renal function and on the low rates of ICD use among Medicare patients with low ejection fraction after acute myocardial infarction.

Dr. Pokorney’s research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the JAMA, Lancet, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Heart Rhythm, JACC Electrophysiology, Circulation Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology, American Heart Journal, American Journal of Cardiology, and Journal of the American Heart Association.

In 2015, Dr. Pollack assumed multiple roles at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA Associate Provost for Innovation in Education, Thomas Jefferson University; Director, Jefferson Institute of Emerging Health Professions; Associate Dean for CME and Strategic Partner Alliances, Thomas Jefferson University; and, Professor and Senior Advisor for Interdisciplinary Research and Clinical Trials, Department of Emergency Medicine, Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. From 2001-2015, Dr. Pollack was Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania and served as Chairman of Emergency Medicine at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia.

From 1992-2001, Dr. Pollack served in various positions in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, an urban, tertiary care teaching hospital affiliated with the Medical College of the University of Arizona and the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. He was Research Director from 1994 to 2000, and he chaired the department from 1997 to 2001. From 2000 through mid-2001, Dr. Pollack was also Director of Emergency Medicine at Arizona Heart Hospital. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Emory University in 1980 with bachelor’s degrees in history and chemistry and with a master’s degree in the history of science and medicine, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Pollack earned his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine and is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha.

Dr. Pollack has long been active in teaching and clinical research and is an international leader in emergency medicine. He is the only physician to have received the American College of Emergency Physicians’ highest national awards in both teaching and research; he also received the national teaching award from the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors. He is the only US emergency physician to be elected a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology. His primary research interests are in the management of thrombosis, both arterial (especially acute coronary syndrome) and venous (deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism), reversal of anticoagulation, infectious disease emergencies, and treatment of pain.

Dr. Pollack has written more than 500 original research articles, chapters, and abstracts, and serves on the editorial boards of several journals and on the steering committees of multiple national and international trials. He is the principal investigator on multiple ongoing trials, studies, and registries. Dr. Pollack also lectures widely on many varied topics in emergency medicine. He is a strong advocate for entrepreneurism and innovation in healthcare and is involved in multiple telehealth initiatives. He is a founding Board member of the Hospital Quality Foundation, a non-for-profit education and research organization dedicated to improvement in the quality of care provided to patients in the hospital and at transition back to the outpatient setting.

Christian Ruff, MD, MPH

Christian T. Ruff, MD, MPH is currently an Associate Physician in the Cardiovascular Division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Ruff graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University with a degree in Neurobiology, earned his Medical Degree with Alpha Omega Alpha honors at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and his masters of public health at the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Ruff completed his Internal Medicine Residency and Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Ruff is an investigator in the Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) Study Group and serves the Director of the Pharmacogenetics Core Laboratory and the Assistant Director of the Clinical Events Committee. He has led a broad array of projects, ranging from investigator initiated studies of biomarkers and genetic variants to large clinical trials, including being the lead co-investigator for the ENGAGE AF-TIMI 48 study evaluating the factor Xa inhibitor edoxaban for the prevention of thromboembolism in patients with atrial fibrillation. Dr. Ruff has specific expertise in atrial fibrillation, both risk stratification and implementation of antithrombotic therapy for stroke prevention, as well as the treatment and prevention of venous thromboembolism. He has been selected to serve as the Chairman for the Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation Consensus Initiative for the North American Thrombosis Forum. He also has an interest in developing innovative computational and bioinformatic strategies to identify important relationships across genes, proteins, and compounds.

Dr. Ruff has given over a hundred lectures nationally and internationally, as well as authored many scholarly articles, editorials, reviews, and book chapters that include the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Journal of the American Medical Association, American Journal of Medicine, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and Nature Reviews Cardiology.

Dr. Ruff has disclosed that he is a consultant for Bayer, Boehringer Ingelheim, Daiichi Sankyo, and Portola.
